We swallow on average 2,000 times a day, twice a minute while awake, and once a minute while asleep.

The only outwardly visible sign of a swallow should be movement of the throat. The tongue should rest in the roof of the mouth, and there should be no movement of the cheeks or lips.

Abnormal swallow patterns are many and varied. Lips can be pulled in. Cheeks can be sucked in or blown out.

Lips are muscles, and like any muscle, increase in size when used. Imbalance in lip size is an indication that the muscle is working in an imbalanced way.

A scalloped pattern on the side of the tongue is an indication that the tongue is sitting between the teeth during the swallow, rather that in the roof of the mouth where it should be.

When incorrect swallow patterns are present, 2,000 times a day, day in, day out, your smile will never be as beautiful as it could be.
