The correct balance between the rate and depth of breathing is required to enable and establish a breathing pattern the promotes optimum gas exchange.

Over breathing is much more commonly seen than under breathing. It occurs when too much CO² is breathed out.

Over breathing or hyperventilation is most often associated with rapid breathing, but can also occur with deep breathing.

As long as the ratio between rate and depth are correct, it is possible to breath effectively whilst breathing with both rapid and slow breaths, and with deep and shallow breathing.

Doing a course of breathing exercises with a capnotrainer to provide biofeedback, alows you to see the immediate effect changing rate and depth has on your CO² levels, and enables us to relearn how breathing with the correct balance feels.
